Why I Made OptimEyes

Because I get so distracted at night I find it hard to concentrate on the projects that really matter.

The only time I have to work on the projects that really matter to me is after my son goes to bed at night, around 9 pm. After a long hard day of working my 9 to 5 job and then taking care of my son after work, I am wiped out. It if very easy to just says “screw it” to my projects and watch shows on Netflix or other streaming providers.

Even when I gathered up the will to work on my projects, I would often go off on tangents, looking up somewhat related information and falling down tutorial rabbit holes or continue farther off topic as my mind wandered, only to realize an hour later I didn’t’ get anything done.

I thought, maybe if I could block some of these websites somehow, it would help keep me on track. It would provide some guardrails to keep me at least mostly heading in the right direction. If it helps me stay on track even once per month it would be worth it.

Thus the OptimEyes Chrome extension was born. There are some extensions that have similar feature, but I thought I could do better. Some have so many features that they are complicated to find what you want. Others didn’t have enough feature to be useful for what I really wanted. So I decided to put my own spin on it. I wanted to make an extension that didn’t have too many things but it does them very well.

As I used my own extension, installed on my Chrome browser from my local computer, I thought others might like to use this extension also, so I published it to the Chrome web store.

I have received some good feedback from others that have installed it so far. There are more features I would like to include to make it even more useful for people so I will keep developing the extension. I will be making many updates including bug fixes, code and UI clean-up, as well as adding new feature.
